Technology-Enchanced Foreign Language Learning

Project duration

Tallinn University Research Fund Project "Technology-Enhanced Foreign Language Learning"

Tallinn University's research fund project "Technology-Enhanced Foreign Language Learning: Establishing an Interdisciplinary Research Group for Developing Research Methods and Instruments" 01.09.2021 - 30.06.2024.

The need for the project arises from the fact that technology often supports the teaching of natural and exact sciences. In social sciences and humanities, the use of technology has been more modest.

Over three years, an interdisciplinary research group consisting of foreign language teachers, educational technologists, didacticians, and researchers from three institutes of Tallinn University - the Institute of Humanities, the Institute of Educational Sciences, and the Institute of Digital Technologies - has studied how to engage learners in foreign language classes. In the co-creation lab, technology-enhanced foreign language learning designs have been created and tested, utilizing various technologies: ICT, robotics, augmented reality, sensors, and devices from the TLU EDUSPACE lab. The learning materials can be found under Õpiampsud. Developed research instruments, which can be used in schools in the future, and the results of the study can be found under Uuringud.

The follow-up activities of the project are related to the Erasmus+ project, which addresses the use of artificial intelligence in foreign language learning. The Erasmus+ TRAILS project involves three countries: Spain, Portugal, and Estonia. The participating institutions are Tallinn University, Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, educational associations Kokoro Association and Associació de Mestres Rosa Sensat, and three schools: Tallinn French Lyceum, Institut Catarina Albert, and Colégio de São Gonçalo de Amarante.
